In whose best interest? Childhoods, children and the international politics of protection

In 2019, it will be celebrated the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention has had a profound impact in every country because it recognizes that children and adolescents are ‘subject of rights.’ Since then, children have come to play an increasing role in the international political agenda.

For this 30th anniversary, the Institute of International Relations and the Department of Social Services of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), with the support of the International Center for Research and Policy on Childhood (CIESPI), are co-organizing a conference to discuss the Child Protection International Regime. It will take place in Rio de Janeiro, at PUC-Rio, on May 20-22, 2019.

The conference will bring together academics, intergovernmental organizations and civil society to engage in a debate about different narratives and perspectives on the theme, such as questions about the rights of the child and the limits of those rights, the militarization of childhood, geographic mobility and immobility, the day to day life of children in cities and their participation in politics.
