We have been following with great concern the impacts of climate change in the country and in the world and we are aware of the consequences for the rights of children and young people.

We wish to deepen our understanding of the perceptions and actions of young people about climate change and at the same time contribute to the implementation of strategies for engaging young people in the topic. 

In August 2024, first phase of the project started. We trained field researchers to interview 200 young people between the ages of 12 and 18 in ten Brazilian cities, situated in five regions of the country. Once analyzed, we will distribute the results broadly in Brazil and elsewhere. In partnership with Associação Cidade Escola Aprendiz or the City School Apprentice Association and with the help of a group of youth consultants we will construct strategies to enlarge the scope of the results of the study. We will create a variety of materials aimed at students, key actors and public sector workers to sensitize and mobilize them to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. 

The project, approved by the ethics committee of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, is coordinated by Irene Rizzini, professor in the Department of Social Work and director of CIESPI. The project is supported by the José Luiz Egydio Setúbal Foundation and the New Institute for Health.
